Performers & Workshops

Our line-up this year

Our line-up this year really is a who's-who of the Old-Timey, Bluegrass, Irish and Jazz scene for everything banjo! The 'A-List' has lined up to perform at our little festival - we are honoured!

A regular of the Guildford Banjo Jamboree, I have been playing Clawhammer banjo for over 25 years. I’ve played in bands, ensembles and sometimes solo on stages, in hall and pubs throughout Victoria and beyond. If you have never played clawhammer banjo, are curious about the style or just want to brush up on absolute beginner technique, then this workshop is for you. No experience necessary, we will start from the very beginning. See you there.

(with some help from John Boothroyd)

This teaching workshop is intended for advanced beginner to intermediate players; you should have a basic ability to play the basic clawhammer style. We will look at a relatively little-used variant banjo tuning, f-DGCD, using the ballad John Hardy and the tune Wild House at Stoney Point as teaching examples.

[Ed.] In typical fashion, Stan has meticulously prepared a comprehensive set of materials for his workshop, including music, tablature and recordings. Download below. [Ed.] Latest: Stan has updated the John Hardy music and TAB (2nd September). I'll leave the original rather than replace, because there will be a lesson in that as well...

Five string banjo player, Mick Harrison, has been part of the Melbourne Bluegrass/ Banjo scene for around 30 years. Having played with The Busby Mountain Boys, The Hillwilliams, Hardrive, and now presently with The Old Crossroads and Alluvium. For this workshop, we will focus on a traditional fiddle tune (Salt Creek), commonly played in jam sessions. The aim is to firstly demonstrate how to play it in a “straight ahead”, Scruggs style. Then later, play it in a more melodic, fiddle tune style. We’ll also work through back up options, for behind the fiddle breaks.
