Performers & Workshops

Sean Kenan is a full-time street performer in Castlemaine and Daylesford. He plays Irish tenor banjo and Irish fiddle. Sean played in the traditional Irish Band, Poteen back in the 1970's. He moved to Canberra in 1990 and was a founding member of the Tinkers, an Irish tune band that was unique in the fact there were no songs, just tunes. Mark Twain played the banjo and said, "There comes a time in every man's life when he realises the most important thing, playing the banjo." This is the stage of life that Sean has arrived at.

A string instrument enthusiast and one of the founders of the Jamboree, Chris this year will be showing and playing comparisons between various banjo forms and other stringed instruments, as well as demonstrating some flailing and finger-picking techniques on the 5-string banjo. Compare the banjo mandolin and the mandolin, the banjo ukulele and the ukulele, the 6-string banjo and the guitar, the tenor (4-string) banjo and the mandola, the Shamisen (Japanese 3-stringed "banjo") and the dulcimer. Tunes will include "Mama Don’t Allow" in G. Listen, view, try or bring your own.

A regular of the Guildford Banjo Jamboree, I have been playing Clawhammer banjo for over 25 years. I’ve played in bands, ensembles and sometimes solo on stages, in hall and pubs throughout Victoria and beyond. If you have never played clawhammer banjo, are curious about the style or just want to brush up on absolute beginner technique, then this workshop is for you. No experience necessary, we will start from the very beginning. See you there.
